Nashville Celebrates Excellence in Local Communications

NASHVILLE, TN – (Sept. 17, 2008) – The Nashville Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) presented Gold Pen Awards to communication industry professionals during a ceremony on Sept. 16, 2008. The Tennessean’s Beverly Keel and former NewsChannel 5 anchor Chris Clark hosted the evening at Cabana Restaurant.

“Some of the best professional communicators in the world are right here in Nashville, and Gold Pen gives them the opportunity to showcase their finest work,” said, Sharon Harper, chapter president.

The 2008 Gold Pen Awards recognize great communication work that was produced or implemented between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2007. A panel of judges from other southeastern U.S. IABC Chapters evaluated entries based on the quality of the work plan and the quality of the work sample.

Thirty-eight Gold Pen Awards were presented, including 18 Gold Awards, 10 Silver Awards, and six Bronze Awards to business communicators and/or their respected agencies.

Seigenthaler Public Relations took top honors receiving 13 awards, including 10 Gold, two Silver and one Bronze award. Other award winners included Lovell Communications with seven awards, High Fidelity with four awards, The Affinion Group with four awards, NAMI Communications with four awards, IBIS Communications with two awards, Caterpillar Financial with one award and World Christian Broadcasting with one award.

Also during the awards presentation, the IABC 2008 EXCEL Award, the chapter’s premier honor for a non-member, was presented to local communications expert Beth Fortune.

“Beth’s talent and leadership are attributes every communicator should aspire to achieve,” Harper said. “Her peers have admired her work for a long time and our chapter is honored to recognize her excellence.”
Fortune serves as interim vice chancellor for public affairs at Vanderbilt University. She leads the university's comprehensive communications, government and community initiatives and serves as the chief spokesperson.

Sue Atkinson, founder of Atkinson PR and a board member of several community organizations, received IABC Nashville’s Career Lifetime Achievement Award. She was recognized as a “change agent for Nashville” and “iconic contributor to our city’s past, present and future” for campaigns and initiatives that brought Nissan, the Titans and the Predators to Nashville.

The chapter’s two previous winners of the award, PR maven Paula Lovell of Lovell Communications, and 40 year news anchor veteran, Chris Clark, were in attendance.
